On February 28, Shaanxi Automotive Group Co., Ltd. celebrated its 40th anniversary of plant construction in Xi’an with a grand event that brought together industry leaders, government officials, and representatives from partner companies. Notable attendees included He Guangyuan, Honorary President of the China Federation of Machinery Industry; Dong Yang, Executive Vice President and Secretary General of the China Automotive Industry Association; Zhang Xingye, Honorary Chairman of the China Automotive Engineering Society; and Fu Yuwu, among other distinguished guests. The event also featured the presentation of the “Shaanxi Auto†character award, symbolizing the company’s long-standing achievements.
Over the past four decades, Shaanxi Auto has transformed from a small enterprise struggling in a remote mountain valley to a globally recognized commercial vehicle production base. Zhang Xiaoyu, Chairman of the China Association of Automobile Engineering, once visited the new Shaanxi Auto base and remarked, “If you haven’t traveled abroad or had the chance to see some of the top heavy truck factories in Europe and America, then come to Shaanxi Auto — the Shaanxi Automobile Commercial Vehicle Industrial Park represents world-class heavy truck manufacturing technology today.†Similarly, Yu Zhen, President of the China Machinery Industry Federation, praised Shaanxi Auto as a leading example in the heavy truck industry, calling it a "banner" for quality, product variety, and corporate culture.
Founded in 1968 in a desolate area along the Caijiapo River in Baoji, Shaanxi Auto faced extreme challenges during its early years. It developed its first domestically produced 5-ton military off-road vehicle in Yan’an, ending the era where China's military lacked suitable vehicles. However, by the 1980s, the company struggled due to the shift from military to civilian production and heavy debt from restructuring. In the 1990s, under the leadership of current Chairman Zhang Yupu, the company turned around, becoming profitable within two years and eventually relocating to Xi’an, setting a successful precedent for the development of both old and new bases.
In 2002, Shaanxi Auto expanded through strategic partnerships and asset reorganization, forming Shaanqi Group with multiple subsidiaries. It invested heavily in technological upgrades, building one of the most advanced heavy-duty axle production facilities in the country. By 2003, the company launched a 2,700-acre commercial vehicle industrial park in Xi’an, aiming for domestic and international standards. Later that year, it secured RMB 1 billion in funding from Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum Group, supporting its ambitious “Eleventh Five-Year Plan.â€
In 2007, Shaanxi Auto released the industry’s first Blue Book on the living conditions of Chinese truck drivers and introduced a comprehensive customer care program, enhancing service quality and brand loyalty. With over 60,000 heavy trucks sold that year, the company achieved total sales of 18 billion yuan and revenue of 15 billion yuan. Its products were exported to more than 36 countries, showcasing global reach.
Looking ahead, Shaanxi Auto aims to expand its product range, focusing on heavy, medium, light, and micro commercial vehicles. By 2010, it targets annual sales of 30 billion yuan and entry into the national top 15 auto producers. By 2012, the goal is to reach 50 billion yuan in revenue. This growth reflects the company’s commitment to innovation, quality, and global competitiveness.
