Bayer Polyurethane Coatings Solve Metal Corrosion Resistance Problems

Bayer MaterialScience is making significant progress in the development and expansion of advanced coating technologies. Recently, the company has successfully introduced a high-performance metal protective coating designed to withstand extreme conditions both indoors and outdoors. This innovative coating ensures long-term protection for metal products, extending their service life beyond 10 years. The breakthrough was unveiled at the 2008 Paint and Coatings Expo held in Los Angeles, where Bayer experts also presented their latest advancements in polyurethane coating technology during a technical seminar. The presentation focused on aliphatic polyurethane coatings used for anti-corrosion treatment of metal structures. Experts from Bayer MaterialScience shared their insights on how these coatings outperform traditional systems in various applications. The seminar was led by three key researchers from Bayer AG: Chak Wong from the Bayer Technology Service Center, who has dedicated years to developing galvanized and zinc-rich paint protection systems for metal structures in chemical environments; Carl Angeloff, Sales Manager for NAFTA Area at Bayer MaterialScience Anticorrosion Coatings; and Kurt Best, Senior Chemist at Bayer MaterialScience. Together, they presented the results of their research and provided detailed analysis on the performance of different coating systems. During the workshop, Mr. Wong conducted a comparative study using steel and metal samples exposed to harsh chemical production environments. He tested high-temperature galvanizing and various coating systems, including epoxy resin, traditional polyurethane, and a new fast-curing aliphatic polyurethane system. Based on the results, he highlighted that aliphatic polyurethane coatings offer clear advantages over other systems. Not only do they cure quickly, but they also provide excellent adhesion, gloss retention, and color stability. These benefits can significantly reduce corrosion maintenance costs for end-users. Mr. Wong emphasized that Bayer MaterialScience has long been committed to developing high-performance polyurethane coatings using premium raw materials. This dedication has given the company extensive field experience and a strong theoretical foundation for applications in extreme environments. He hopes that the Paint and Coatings Expo will help PACE members gain a deeper understanding of Bayer’s polyurethane technology and assist users seeking reliable metal protection solutions.
