On October 8, China's No.1 Heavy Machinery Group signed a significant manufacturing agreement with Dalian New Group, marking the beginning of the development of the country's first domestically-produced ethylene oxide reactor. This breakthrough is expected to break the long-standing foreign monopoly on this critical industrial equipment, signaling a major advancement in China's heavy machinery sector.
The reactor, weighing approximately 500 tons, will have an annual production capacity of 60,000 tons of ethylene oxide. It incorporates patented technology from the U.S.-based SD Company, and all design, construction, and manufacturing processes will be handled domestically. The project has now moved into the design phase, with completion scheduled for October next year. Once finished, the reactor will be installed at the Bohai Biochemical Project, a subsidiary of Dalian New Group located in Jilin City.
According to Cai Lianzhong, a deputy general manager at China’s heavy industry company, ethylene oxide is a crucial chemical raw material used in nearly 1,000 different products. However, it is highly toxic, flammable, and challenging to transport or import. Currently, China faces a supply-demand gap of 3 million tons annually. Although the country has a production capacity of 1.3 million tons per year, all existing reactors are imported, with manufacturing technology controlled by Germany, Japan, Italy, and India.
This new domestically-made reactor represents a significant milestone in China’s ability to produce large-scale pressure vessels, enhancing both its technical capabilities and global competitiveness in heavy machinery. It marks a step forward in reducing reliance on foreign suppliers and strengthening the domestic petrochemical industry.
