Bayer Polyurethane Coatings Solve Metal Corrosion Resistance Problems

Bayer MaterialScience is making significant progress in the development and expansion of advanced coating technologies. Recently, the company has successfully introduced a high-performance metal protective coating capable of withstanding extreme environmental conditions—both indoors and outdoors. This innovative coating ensures that metal products remain durable and protected under harsh circumstances, extending their service life to over 10 years. The breakthrough was unveiled at the 2008 Paint and Coatings Expo held in Los Angeles, where Bayer experts also participated in technical seminars to share insights on the latest advancements in polyurethane coating technology. During the event, experts from Bayer MaterialScience presented their research on aliphatic polyurethane coatings, focusing on their effectiveness in protecting metal structures from corrosion. The seminar highlighted how these coatings offer superior performance compared to traditional systems, including faster curing times, better adhesion, and excellent color retention. These features not only enhance the durability of coated surfaces but also help reduce long-term maintenance costs for users. The project was led by three key researchers from Bayer AG: Chak Wong from the Bayer Technology Service Center, who specializes in galvanized and zinc-rich paint protection systems for chemical environments; Carl Angeloff, Sales Manager for NAFTA Area at Bayer MaterialScience Anticorrosion Coatings; and Kurt Best, Senior Chemist at Bayer MaterialScience. Together, they conducted extensive testing and analysis to validate the performance of the new coating systems. At the workshop, Mr. Wong demonstrated the effectiveness of aliphatic polyurethane coatings using steel samples exposed to corrosive conditions typical in chemical production facilities. He compared them with high-temperature galvanizing and other traditional coating methods, such as epoxy and conventional polyurethane systems. The results clearly showed that the new fast-curing aliphatic polyurethane coating outperformed existing options in terms of adhesion, gloss, and resistance to weathering. Mr. Wong emphasized that Bayer MaterialScience has long focused on developing high-performance polyurethane technologies using premium raw materials. This commitment has provided the company with extensive field experience and a strong scientific foundation, especially in extreme environments. He expressed hope that the Paint and Coatings Expo would allow industry professionals to gain a deeper understanding of Bayer’s coating solutions and assist end-users in selecting the most suitable protection system for their needs.
