In the traditional image of an oil field, a large pumping unit is seen lifting oil from deep underground, working tirelessly day and night. This iconic scene, however, hides a serious problem: the conventional pumping units are highly energy-consuming, consuming massive amounts of electricity each year. For decades, this issue has remained a major challenge in the industry—until now.
Thanks to a breakthrough developed by Zhejiang University, the world’s first three-dimensional permanent magnet motor is set to revolutionize the sector. This innovative technology is expected to significantly reduce energy consumption in oil extraction operations.
Professor Ye Yunyue, the inventor of the three-dimensional permanent magnet motor and a faculty member at Zhejiang University's School of Electrical Engineering, explains that the new pumping unit based on this motor has undergone a complete transformation in its internal structure. By eliminating unnecessary mechanical components and reducing the overall size, the new design not only improves efficiency but also cuts power consumption by over 50%.
What makes this motor unique is its design. Unlike traditional permanent magnet motors, the three-dimensional version features two permanent magnet motors at each end, integrating three dispersing motors into one compact unit. Despite having the same volume as conventional motors, it delivers much higher output power.
The new motor has already been tested for a full year in the Zhongyuan Oilfield, where it demonstrated remarkable performance. According to test results from the Zhongyuan Oilfield Testing Center, the new pumping unit using this motor saves 53.9% more electricity compared to traditional models. Additionally, its compact size means it occupies less than 1 mu (approximately 667 square meters) of space, making it ideal for installation in tight areas.
Currently, the motor and the new pumping unit are being produced by Beijing Aerospace Linquan Petroleum Equipment Co., Ltd. Major oil fields such as Daqing have already placed bulk orders. If this technology is adopted nationwide, it could lead to substantial energy savings across China’s oil industry, marking a significant step toward sustainable and efficient oil production.
Quartz sand is a quartz particle formed by crushing and processing quartz stone. Quartz is a non-metallic mineral, which is a hard, wear-resistant, and chemically stable silicate mineral. The color of quartz sand is milky white or colorless and semi transparent, with a Mohs hardness of 7.
Quartz sand is an important industrial mineral raw material, not a chemical hazardous material, widely used in industries such as glass, casting, ceramics and fireproof materials, smelting of ferrosilicon, metallurgical flux, metallurgy, construction, chemical industry, plastics, rubber, abrasives, filter materials, etc.
