Phosphogypsum identity changed from "residue" to "product"

The China Phosphate Fertilizer Industry Association recently issued a notice urging phosphate fertilizer companies to closely monitor the updated definition of phosphogypsum in the draft revised national standards for architectural gypsum currently under public consultation. This revision is expected to pave the way for more efficient and comprehensive use of phosphogypsum. According to the association, the new draft defines phosphogypsum as a "product" rather than a "waste residue" in both the "definition and terminology" section and the "composition of raw materials for building gypsum." This shift in classification means that phosphate and compound fertilizer companies should treat phosphogypsum like any other product within their operations, integrating it into their overall quality management systems. Companies are advised to develop specific product standards for phosphogypsum, covering aspects such as transportation, storage, stacking, delivery, and yard management. These guidelines must be strictly followed to ensure compliance and quality. In addition, the association emphasized that enterprises should make every effort to improve the yield of phosphoric acid, enhance water purification efficiency, and reduce impurities in phosphogypsum to ensure its quality and stability. This will not only meet industry requirements but also support broader applications. Historically, phosphogypsum has been regarded as a waste byproduct, with its utilization typically referred to as "comprehensive utilization." Currently, a significant portion of this material is used as a substitute for natural gypsum in construction products. The industry has long practiced the reuse of phosphogypsum, including in sulfuric acid production and cement manufacturing. If phosphogypsum is officially recognized as a product rather than a residue, it could significantly boost its usage and elevate the standards required for its application. According to the revised draft of the National Standard for Building Gypsum, phosphogypsum must meet five key criteria: harmless components, suitable material properties (especially low free water content), stable and uniform composition, sufficient supply guarantees, and cost-effectiveness. The Phosphatic Fertilizer Association recommends that high-concentration phosphate and compound fertilizer companies align their management practices with these requirements and actively expand the utilization of phosphogypsum. Furthermore, under the energy-saving and emission reduction targets outlined in the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan," the industry aims to increase annual phosphogypsum output beyond 10 million tons, while raising the comprehensive utilization rate from the current 10% to 20% by 2010. This marks a critical step toward sustainable development and resource optimization in the sector.
