China's export of plastics machinery manufacturing

China's plastics machinery manufacturing industry has come a long way since its first product was produced in the 1950s. Over nearly half a century, especially after the reform and opening-up policies, the sector has experienced rapid growth and development. Today, the industry offers a wide range of products, with major technical and economic indicators approaching or even reaching international standards. It supports a comprehensive industrial system that is increasingly internationalized, specialized, and scaled up. Domestic market needs are largely met, and the ability to generate foreign exchange through exports has significantly improved. Currently, there are approximately 600 enterprises and units involved in the production of plastics machinery and related products in China, with around 250 of them providing plastic molding equipment. The industry has achieved considerable scale, with main production capacity exceeding 100,000 sets. This includes over 8,000 extrusion units, more than 30,000 injection molding machines, and over 3,000 blow molding systems. Annual output value reaches between 8 billion and 10 billion yuan. From a market analysis perspective, from 2001 to 2010, the domestic market for plastics machinery grew at an average annual rate of about 6%. In 2000 and 2005, the market size was 8 billion and 11 billion yuan respectively, and it is expected to reach 14.5 billion yuan by 2010. As product quality improves and the variety expands, the domestic market share of plastics machinery is expected to rise to 70%, 75%, and 80% respectively. Total industrial output is projected to be 5.6 billion, 8.25 billion, and 11.6 billion yuan during these periods. With increased exports, China’s total industrial output value of plastic products is expected to reach 14 billion yuan by 2010—2.33 times that of 2000—with an average annual growth rate of about 9%. From 2001 to 2005, the growth rate was 10%, and from 2006 to 2010, it was 8%. In terms of quantity, the number of plastics machinery units reached 55,000 in 2000 and 75,000 in 2005. By 2010, it is estimated to reach 100,000 units, with injection molding machines accounting for 35%, extruders 25%, blow molding machines 5%, and other presses 35%. In addition to meeting domestic demand, China’s plastics machinery exports have been increasing steadily. Over the past three years, the export of plastics machinery products has seen the fastest growth in history. For many years, foreign exchange earnings from exports were around $50 million, but in 1998, it exceeded $100 million for the first time. In 2001, it reached $238 million, a 31.09% increase compared to 2000. Experts predict that in the future, the main export will be injection molding machines. The expected proportion of various models is 60.4% for injection molding machines, 6.8% for extruders, 11.7% for blow molding machines, and 21.1% for other types. In terms of foreign exchange, 74.1% comes from injection molding machines, 8.1% from extruders, 8% from blow molding machines, and 9.8% from other plastics machinery. China’s mold exports have also shown an upward trend. In 2002, the country exported 19,500 tons of molds worth $252 million, including 468,800 sets of plastic or rubber molds valued at around $172 million, which accounted for 68.3% of all mold exports. The main sources of exported plastic and rubber molds are Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Fujian, contributing 57%, 13.9%, 11%, and 5.2% respectively. Major markets include Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, the U.S., and Singapore, followed by Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, India, Indonesia, and Mexico. Although plastic mold production is widespread across China, it is mainly concentrated in the southeastern coastal provinces, particularly in the Pearl River Delta and Yangtze River Delta regions. Guangdong and Zhejiang are the most developed provinces, producing about two-thirds of the national total. Cities like Dongguan, Shenzhen, and Shunde in Guangdong, and Ningbo and Taizhou in Zhejiang, are leading centers for plastic mold production. Injection molds are the most popular type, primarily serving industries such as automotive, motorcycle, and home appliances.
