In a recent report released by the German Automotive Research Center on September 1, it was revealed that car recalls have become increasingly common, raising concerns among automakers. According to the survey, over the past two years—from June 2002 to June of this year—Renault Motors from France led the list with 18 recalls, making it the most affected among major automotive brands. BMW followed closely with 10 recalls, while Nissan came in third with 9. Mazda and Mercedes each had 8 recalls, and Audi, KIA, Volvo, and Volkswagen each faced 7. Meanwhile, Fiat, Honda, Jaguar, and SAAB reported 5 recalls each, and Chrysler and Peugeot each had 4. Ford, SEAT, and Toyota each conducted 3 recalls, while Opel, Sime, and Citroen had 2 each.
Even luxury sports car manufacturers were not immune. Porsche and Ferrari each issued recalls four and two times respectively during the same period. Notably, only a handful of brands—including Hyundai, DAIHATSU, Daewoo, Lada, Lamborghini, and Maserati—did not issue any recalls during the two-year span.
According to the survey's lead researcher, the growing number of vehicle models, more complex manufacturing processes, and shortened development timelines are key factors behind the rising recall rates. The expansion of product lines has further complicated quality control. The study also highlighted that approximately 40% of the recalled vehicles were due to electronic system failures, while 60% were related to mechanical issues.
Despite the high frequency of recalls, the German Automobile Authority continues to publish annual recall statistics without naming the affected manufacturers. This approach aims to maintain a neutral stance, focusing on overall safety rather than singling out specific brands. As the automotive industry evolves, the challenge of balancing innovation with reliability remains a pressing concern for both manufacturers and consumers alike. (Sui Changhai)
