New pumper/tanker in Spring Grove

The Spring Grove Fire Protection District in McHenry County recently welcomed their new pumper/tanker from Toyne, based in Breda, Iowa. Engine 1844 is a striking addition to their fleet, featuring an HME 1871 Spectr cab and tandem axle chassis that have been extended and fitted with a raised roof to accommodate the enclosed, top-mount pump panel. This setup is designed to replace two aging vehicles: a 1985 Ford C-Series Pierce 1,250 GPM engine and a 1980 GMC 7,000/US Tanker with a 2,200-gallon capacity. The top-mounted pump panel is housed within an enclosed super command cab, much like the district’s 1999 HME/US Tanker pumper. This design choice enhances protection and operational efficiency. Engine 1844 boasts impressive specifications, including a 1,500 gallons-per-minute (GPM) pump and a 3,000-gallon water tank, complemented by a 40-gallon foam tank. Both sides of the vehicle are equipped with high-side compartments, ensuring ample storage space while maintaining accessibility. On the officer’s side, hydraulic ladder racks store ground ladders, while the driver’s side houses a portable tank using overhead hydraulic storage. One notable feature of this pumper/tanker is its extendable chutes, which are positioned just behind the pump module on either side. These chutes allow the vehicle to efficiently discharge water into a portable tank, a capability not commonly found in traditional tankers. Unlike most tankers, Engine 1844 lacks a rear chute, further emphasizing its unique design. The rear of the vehicle is adorned with NFPA-compliant chevron striping, adding both functionality and visual appeal. Engine 1844 represents a significant upgrade for the Spring Grove FPD, combining advanced technology with practical design elements to enhance firefighting capabilities. Its innovative features and robust build make it a standout asset for the department. Photos by Larry Shapiro capture the essence of this impressive apparatus, highlighting its sleek profile and functional layout. In summary, Engine 1844 is more than just a piece of equipment; it’s a testament to the district’s commitment to modernizing their fleet and improving response times. With its powerful pump, ample water capacity, and thoughtful design, this pumper/tanker will undoubtedly play a crucial role in protecting the community for years to come.
