John D. Schultz, affectionately known as "Buddha" or "Schultzy," was a beloved member of our community who left us far too soon on December 1, 2019, at the young age of 49. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.
Born on September 15, 1970, in St. Charles, John was the proud son of John Sr. and Nancy (DeVries) Schultz. His life was dedicated to service, whether it was protecting others as a firefighter or sharing his passion for learning through teaching. John spent 24 years with the Geneva Fire Department before moving on to serve Downers Grove and later Carol Stream. As a lieutenant at Downers Grove, he was a respected leader who cared deeply about his colleagues and the community he protected. His commitment extended beyond firefighting; he was actively involved in EMS initiatives, infection control, and even served on union boards and negotiation committees.
Beyond his professional achievements, John was a devoted family man who cherished every moment spent with his kids—Mia, Ian, and Owen—and their mother, Becky Niemiec. His hobbies included cheering for pro and college football, immersing himself in history, and enjoying classic films like those in the Star Wars saga. John also had a soft spot for old TV shows on METV and could often be found reminiscing about the past.
Though his physical presence has been lost, John's memory lives on through his immediate family, including his sister Barbara (married to Tim Estes), her niece Lindsey Wojcik, and countless friends and relatives who loved him dearly. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, kindness, and dedication that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
The community is rallying together to support John's family during this difficult time. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with funeral costs and alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with losing such a vital member of the household. If you feel moved to contribute, your generosity would mean the world to those left behind.
Rest easy, John. You were—and always will be—a true hero not just to your family but to everyone fortunate enough to have crossed paths with you.
