John spent most of his life serving others. He began his firefighting career with the Geneva Fire Department, where he worked for 24 years. Later, he joined the Downers Grove Fire Department, where he proudly served as a lieutenant. During his tenure there, he was actively involved with the Downers Grove Professional Firefighters Local 3234 from 2000 to 2013. He even served on the Union Executive Board and was part of the negotiations committee. John's dedication extended beyond firefighting—he was a member of the Honor Guard for the AFFI and took great pride in his work. At Downers Grove, he excelled in EMS and held roles such as Designated Infection Control Officer and EMS Coordinator. His passion for the job was evident in how much effort he put into improving the department.
Before joining Downers Grove, John worked with the Carol Stream Fire Protection District from 1994 to 2000. He also shared his knowledge and experience as an instructor at the Downers Grove Fire Academy, Romeoville Fire Academy, and the College of DuPage.
In his personal life, John was a devoted father to his three children: Mia, Ian, and Owen. His greatest joy was spending time with them and his extended family. Outside of work, John had a deep love for history, Star Wars, and classic TV shows like those on METV.
John leaves behind not only his children but also their mother, Becky (Niemiec) Schultz; his sister Barbara (Tim) Estes; her husband Tim and their niece Lindsey Wojcik; along with countless friends and relatives who will miss him deeply.
