Late last night, tragedy struck when a semi-truck crashed into a stationary police cruiser belonging to an Illinois State Trooper. The incident occurred along the southbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294), just south of Willow Road. Emergency services were dispatched shortly after 11 PM, and initial reports described a harrowing scene involving flames and a trapped individual.
Upon arriving at the scene, the Glenview Fire Department encountered significant fire damage to both the truck's cab and the trooper's vehicle. Additional resources were quickly requested, including units from nearby Northbrook and a tanker from Prospect Heights. Crews from Glenview also had to navigate a challenging path by cutting through a fence on the Allstate property adjacent to the highway in order to access a hydrant and bring in more water.
Tragically, the state trooper did not survive the accident. His vehicle was later transported to the Cook County Morgue, where firefighters from Chicago assisted in carefully removing the remains from the severely damaged car. Meanwhile, the truck's driver sustained burns to his hands, reportedly while attempting to rescue the trooper. He was rushed to Lutheran General Hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses and responders alike were left shaken by the intensity of the fire and the devastating outcome. Glenview Engine 8 was among the first emergency vehicles on the scene, as captured in a photograph by Tim Olk. The community is mourning the loss of the trooper, whose dedication to public safety will be deeply missed. Updates continue to emerge as investigations into the cause of this collision unfold.
