Last night, tragedy struck when a tractor-trailer crashed into a stationary state trooper's vehicle along the southbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294), just south of Willow Road in Illinois. The incident occurred while the trooper was parked on the inside shoulder. Emergency services were dispatched shortly after 11 PM, and initial reports described a harrowing scene with flames engulfing both the truck and the police car, leaving one occupant trapped.
By the time the Glenview Fire Department arrived, the situation had escalated significantly. Heavy fire was reported around the truck's cab and the trooper's vehicle. Additional resources were quickly requested, including a tanker unit from Prospect Heights, to ensure there was enough water to manage the intense blaze. Meanwhile, Glenview firefighters took an unconventional route, cutting through a fence on the Allstate property located西侧 of the highway, to access a hydrant and stretch a hose across the busy roadway.
The driver of the semi-truck was rushed to Lutheran General Hospital with hand injuries, believed to have been sustained during efforts to save the trooper. Unfortunately, the state trooper did not survive the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Subsequent recovery operations involved Chicago firefighters working meticulously to extricate the trooper's remains from the severely damaged patrol car, with representatives from the Illinois State Police and Chicago Police standing by throughout the process.
