Last Saturday evening, I happened to be in the area when a major incident unfolded at the intersection of 4600 North Kedzie in Chicago. A CTA Brown Line train collided violently with an SUV that was somehow obstructing the tracks. As soon as I arrived, I could see the chaos unfold—firefighters were already on the scene, working quickly to stabilize the situation and ensure everyone’s safety.
From what I witnessed, the impact was severe enough to derail the train partially, leaving it resting awkwardly near the station platform. The driver of the SUV was trapped inside the vehicle, clearly injured, and firefighters were doing their best to extract them. It wasn’t immediately clear why the car had been stopped on the tracks, but the damage to both the train and the vehicle was undeniable. The driver’s side of the SUV bore the brunt of the collision, crumpled and twisted from the force of the impact.
In the aftermath, emergency responders worked tirelessly, setting up hydraulic equipment connected to a portable generator to help safely free the trapped driver. Meanwhile, other teams were busy surveying the damage, checking for any additional hazards, and ensuring the area remained secure. The whole operation felt intense yet methodical, with every member of the team focused on their specific task.
It was a harrowing sight, and as I stood there watching, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the professionalism and dedication of those involved. The train derailment caused significant disruptions, but the priority was always on the safety of everyone involved.
If you’re interested in seeing more visuals of the event, Tim Olk has documented the entire incident in an extensive gallery of around 100 images, which you can view [here](link). Additionally, the Chicago Tribune has provided a brief summary of the incident [here](link).
Looking back now, it’s hard not to think about how quickly life can change in an instant. One moment, everything seems routine, and the next, it’s chaos. I’m just glad that despite the severity of the collision, everyone made it through okay.
