Texas Instruments Introduces High Accuracy 4-20 for Industrial Sensors and Monitors

Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced a high-precision 4-20mA transmitter housed in a compact MSOP-8 package. The XTR117 is designed to deliver minimal offset and range errors, enabling accurate over-scale performance while effectively suppressing noise. It operates with a low current consumption of up to 250µA, making it ideal for power-sensitive applications. As part of TI’s Burr-Brown product line, the XTR117 supports a wide operating voltage range from 7.5V to 40V and can withstand surges as high as 50V. Its small size and precise 4-20mA output make it an excellent choice for pressure, temperature, and humidity transmitters, as well as industrial process monitoring systems. The XTR117 is built to handle challenging electrical environments. It provides a stable 5V supply at 3.75mA to power external sensor conditioning circuits. With just one external resistor, it simplifies the implementation of a 100:1 Iout/Iin transfer function for voltage-output sensor conditioning circuits. With its low quiescent current, accurate 4-20mA scaling (no calibration required), compact form factor, and cost-effective design, the XTR117 offers a superior alternative to discrete solutions for this type of application. It is available in an extended temperature range of -40°C to 125°C, ensuring reliable performance in demanding conditions. The XTR117 serves as a powerful core component for two-wire 4-20mA systems, offering flexible signal pre-conditioning options. It can be used alongside digital verification sensor signal conditioning chips like the PGA309, low-power microcontrollers such as the MSP430, or combinations of instrumentation amplifiers with voltage references (e.g., INA122, INA118, REF31xx), or low-power op amps and references (e.g., OPA335, OPA344, REF32xx). This versatility makes it a valuable building block for a wide range of industrial and automation applications.
