On August 13th, Sichuan Tianyi Science and Technology Co., Ltd., established by the Southwest Research and Design Institute of Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., successfully launched a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) hydrogen production system with a gas treatment capacity of 340,000 Nm³/h. All technical specifications met the design requirements, marking a significant milestone in China's hydrogen production technology. This plant is now recognized as the world’s largest PSA hydrogen production facility, showcasing that China has reached advanced levels in this critical technology.
Previously, the largest operational PSA hydrogen plant in China had a capacity of 75,000 Nm³/h, while the largest abroad was 236,000 Nm³/h. According to Wang Heming, Deputy General Manager of Shenhehua Group, this PSA purification hydrogen plant is a core component of the group's "coal-to-oil" project. It converts pulverized coal into syngas through partial oxidation, then purifies it via PSA to produce high-purity hydrogen at 99.9% purity, with a daily output of 280,000 Nm³/h and a hydrogen yield of over 90%.
Industry experts highlight that the project not only leads globally in scale but also features groundbreaking innovations in engineering design, process optimization, automation, specialized valves, and adsorbents. For instance, the process employs a novel dual-discharge operation system with independent intellectual property rights, simplifying the flow and improving stability and yield. The use of 12 towers with four grouping processes for the first time enabled a smooth transition from 12 to 6 towers, enhancing efficiency and control.
Additionally, the project introduced a new Yx sealing ring for flat panel seals, ensuring zero leakage. Over 172 valves were inspected and approved by the Shenhua Group’s expert panel. A new air distributor was implemented to boost adsorbent efficiency, while the particle size of the adsorbent was optimized to reduce dead space and improve hydrogen recovery rates.
