Volunteers from over a dozen suburban fire departments joined forces as part of the Lights and Ladders Brigade, with Project Fire Buddies playing a key role in transforming the Lockport home of 15-year-old Vinnie Gincauskas, who is currently fighting a rare form of cancer. The team arrived with holiday spirit, set up some festive music, and got to work on their assigned tasks.
Vinnie was diagnosed with DSRCT—desmoplastic small round cell tumor—in March. This aggressive type of soft tissue sarcoma develops in the body’s connective tissues. He recently underwent major surgery to remove nearly 100 tumors from his abdomen, following an earlier operation that removed more tumors and a lymph node from his chest. Despite the challenges, Vinnie remains strong and grateful for the support he's receiving.
Project Fire Buddies, a nonprofit initiative started in 2016 by local fire departments, has been a source of hope and encouragement for Vinnie and his family. The group, which began in Oak Forest, now includes 30 departments across the south suburbs, including Oak Lawn, Palos, Orland Park, Tinley Park, and many others. Their mission is to bring joy and comfort to children battling serious illnesses through acts of kindness and support.
Vinnie expressed deep gratitude for the efforts of the volunteers. “Thank you so much—it means a lot for you to do this for me and my family,†he said, reflecting on the overwhelming outpouring of love and care.
This particular event was the second stop on a five-home tour for the brigade. This year, the group managed to decorate 13 homes, with firefighters from departments like Oak Lawn, Chicago, Posen, Flossmor, Country Club Hills, Lockport, and many more participating. The effort is part of the larger Lights and Ladders Brigade, which works under the Finley Forever Foundation. It brings together several organizations, including the Tom Hopkins Foundation and Christmas without Cancer, to spread holiday cheer and raise funds for families facing cancer.
All decorations used this year were purchased with donations collected throughout the year, totaling nearly $15,000. These decorations are given to the families and remain with them as a lasting memory of the kindness they received.
