Environmental pressure promotes structural optimization of the dyestuff industry

The dye industry is currently undergoing significant changes, with a declining number of companies due to increasingly strict environmental regulations. This was the key takeaway from a recent interview with Tian Liming, the Secretary General of the China Dyestuff Industry Association. He revealed that there are over 500 dye companies in China, but around 30 to 40 were shut down last year alone. The industry’s outlook remains uncertain, as both rising market competition and growing environmental pressures continue to challenge smaller firms. Wastewater management is one of the biggest issues in the dye industry, which has long drawn attention from environmental regulators. As a fine chemical industry, it involves numerous product types and small production volumes, leading to most companies operating on a small scale. In fact, the majority of firms produce less than 10,000 tons annually, with only a few reaching 150,000 tons or more. This makes it difficult for many businesses to meet environmental standards without substantial investment. Tian emphasized that environmental protection pressure has never been higher, with pollution control costs continuously rising. Without scaling up, many companies risk financial losses. Last year, several dye manufacturers were forced to close due to environmental violations, including those affected by the cyanobacterial bloom in Taihu Lake. These events highlighted the urgent need for better waste management and compliance with stricter regulations. Despite these challenges, some large-scale companies have seen improved profitability. China remains the world's largest producer and exporter of dyes, with an estimated annual output of over 700,000 tons and exports of about 270,000 tons. While the domestic market is oversupplied, leading to fierce competition and low profit margins, larger enterprises have managed to grow their profits significantly. In terms of environmental technology, the industry has made notable progress. For example, over half of disperse dye production now uses water jacket technology, which recycles water and reduces wastewater. Reactive dyes, commonly used for cotton, now see 80% of production using membrane filtration, greatly improving quality and reducing water usage. Similarly, 90% of vulcanizing dyes use sulfur recovery technology, offering both environmental and economic benefits. However, smaller companies often struggle to adopt these technologies due to high costs. Some niche products are still produced by small firms, but Tian suggests that entering chemical industrial parks could help. Centralized treatment of "three wastes" (waste gas, waste water, and solid waste) can lower pollution control costs and improve efficiency. Additionally, concentrating on a single product variety can lead to economies of scale, boosting overall productivity. Beyond domestic challenges, Chinese dye companies also face international green barriers. As the top global exporter, China must meet higher environmental standards abroad. European and American markets are imposing stricter requirements on dyes, pushing companies to develop eco-friendly alternatives. With the EU’s REACH regulation requiring pre-registration of chemicals, the industry must act quickly to avoid losing access to key markets. Tian urged companies to invest in research and development, focusing on environmentally compliant products. Staying competitive in the global market requires not just innovation, but also a commitment to sustainability. The future of the dye industry depends on balancing growth with environmental responsibility.

Folding Packing With Labeling

With the increasing quality of clothing, in the clothing logistics, hanging transportation has become a trend. Vertical packing is the best packing way for hanging and transporting. It can overcome the wrinkles generated after packing and transportation of garments and maintain a good appearance.
