Saturday, July 23, 2016—It was a typical Saturday afternoon when Chicago Fire Department’s Tower Ladder 10 received an emergency call about four individuals trapped inside an elevator at a high-rise building located on North Halsted Street. After multiple attempts to reset the elevator proved unsuccessful, the department decided to send out a specialized team for a blind shaft operation.
The responding units included:
- Battalion 3
- Tower 10
- Squad 1
- Squad 2
- Special Operations Chief 515
- An ambulance
When the firefighters arrived, they discovered that the elevator was stuck between the second and third floors. To ensure safety, the team secured the elevator and set up their operations on the fifth floor. Using ropes, they descended from the fourth floor into the shaft. Once they reached the trapped individuals, they found four girls who had been inside for approximately two hours. Fortunately, despite their ordeal, the girls remained in good spirits.
The firefighters carefully lowered each girl one by one to the fourth floor using ropes, where paramedics stood ready to assess their condition. The entire rescue operation was carried out efficiently and safely, ensuring no further complications arose during the process.
