I recently came across some interesting updates about the Beach Park Fire Department, formerly known as the Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District. The department has undergone quite a transformation over the years, both in terms of its name and its operational capabilities. The shift from Bonnie Brook to Beach Park Fire Department was made official back in 2002 to better reflect the expanded scope of services provided by the department.
The Beach Park Fire Department serves a significant portion of northeastern Lake County, covering approximately 14 square miles. Their jurisdiction includes parts of unincorporated areas within the county as well as portions of Beach Park itself. However, it's worth noting that the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department handles emergency responses for a specific section of Beach Park.
One of the standout pieces of equipment in their fleet is Engine 1222, a 2008 Seagrave Marauder II engine that stands as their latest acquisition. Interestingly, Engine 1212, a 2002 HME/Alexis engine, is currently receiving maintenance work at Alexis Fire Apparatus. The department also boasts a diverse range of apparatus, including models from notable manufacturers such as Alexis, Pierce, Seagrave, Medtec, and Osage.
In recent developments, Beach Park has established a second fire station located at 13110 W. Major Avenue in Beach Park. This unique facility began as a residential home with an attached garage, which was later transformed into a functional fire station. The original garage was converted into a lobby and office space, while a two-bay addition was constructed to house the department's vehicles. At present, this station operates with a crew of two or three members who form a jump company, ready to respond to calls depending on whether an engine or ambulance is needed.
Station 2 officially opened its doors in April 2010, marking a significant milestone for the department. The facility has since become a vital hub for emergency response operations in the area. The photos I've seen show how this station has been integrated into the community, blending modern functionality with the charm of its original structure.
