Just got some fresh updates on the Beach Park Fire Department, which used to be called the Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District. They’ve really stepped up their game over the years, now covering about 14 square miles in northeast Lake County. Their service area includes both unincorporated parts of the county and Beach Park itself, although the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department still handles part of Beach Park.
One of their newer rigs is Engine 1222, a 2008 Seagrave Marauder II that’s been a solid addition to their fleet. Meanwhile, Engine 1212, a 2002 HME/Alexis model, is currently getting some work done at Alexis Fire Apparatus. They’ve also got a mix of other vehicles from different manufacturers like Pierce, Seagrave, Medtec, and Osage, giving them quite the diverse fleet.
Their second station, located at 13110 W. Major Avenue in Beach Park, is pretty unique. It started out as an existing house with an attached garage, which was converted into an office and lobby area. Then they added a two-bay extension for the apparatus. Right now, it’s staffed by a jump company of two or three people who can cover either the engine or ambulance depending on the situation.
The station officially opened back in April 2010, and it’s been running smoothly ever since. I recently saw some photos of the place, and it looks like they’ve done a great job making it functional while keeping the original charm of the house intact. It’s always nice to see departments adapt old buildings into modern facilities without losing their character.
I’ve also heard that Beach Park has been investing in their equipment, ensuring they’re prepared for anything. With the new station and updated fleet, they’re definitely set up to handle emergencies effectively. It’s inspiring to see how they’ve evolved from their earlier days as the Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District to become the Beach Park Fire Department we know today.
