Over the years, the Wilmette Fire Department has undergone quite a transformation, particularly when it comes to their fleet. Starting back in 1958, the department's history is beautifully captured in a gallery accessible via the 'Historic Photos' button on the pages dedicated to Wilmette's fire stations. These images come from various sources, including contributions from Bill Friedrich, Karl Klotz, Larry Shapiro, and even some from Jeff Schielke’s collection.
One of the most notable shifts occurred in the 1980s when the department began transitioning away from Seagrave apparatus and started integrating vehicles manufactured by E-ONE into their fleet. This change marked a significant evolution in how the department prepared for emergencies. Even today, Wilmette continues to maintain two operational stations, although their approach to staffing and equipment deployment has evolved over time.
Station 2, located on the west side, houses an engine and an ambulance, with a spare engine kept as backup. Meanwhile, the main headquarters station is equipped with a battalion chief, an ambulance, and a tower ladder. Interestingly, should the department be fully staffed, they often deploy a squad to follow the ambulance, ensuring rapid response across the area. Additionally, there’s always a reserve tower ladder available at the headquarters station, providing redundancy in case of maintenance or unforeseen circumstances requiring the removal of primary equipment from active duty.
Back in the 1970s and extending into the mid-1980s, Wilmette maintained a similar setup with two trucks on their roster. They operated a 1962 Seagrave mid-mount ladder truck alongside a 1975 Seagrave 55-foot Snorkel. Unfortunately, we haven’t yet managed to track down any photographs of the Cadillac ambulances that were once part of their fleet.
Despite these historical gaps, the current setup remains robust, showcasing the department's commitment to modernizing while preserving its rich history. The integration of diverse manufacturers into their fleet highlights their adaptability and forward-thinking strategy, ensuring they remain prepared to handle whatever challenges arise in protecting the community of Wilmette.
