It was another busy day for the Chicago Fire Department as they responded to a still alarm at 7115 South Sangamon Street on Friday. As Engine 54 was en route, they radioed back to the Emergency Fire Alarm Office (EFAO) that they could already see visible signs of fire. Upon arrival, Engine 54 quickly boxed off the area and reported heavy flames coming out of the structure. The fire was spreading rapidly, and there were concerns about the neighboring building, 7117 South Sangamon, which also caught fire.
Here's a look at some of the photos captured by Josh Boyajian. You can view the entire gallery on his website. Unfortunately, I couldn't embed the images directly, but trust me when I say these photos really capture the intensity of the situation.
Meanwhile, Dennis McGuire, Jr., provided more details about how the incident unfolded. Engine Company 54 was the first to arrive and discovered a fire in a two-and-a-half-story wooden frame building. While Engine 54 went inside to extinguish the flames, Truck Company 20 focused on ventilation and search operations. Thankfully, no one was found inside the burning building. However, the fire managed to spread slightly to the adjacent property, 7117 South Sangamon, which shared the same architectural design.
One challenge faced during the operation was finding a reliable water source. Engine 54's hydrant officer initially encountered a frozen hydrant, which prompted the Incident Commander to call for a Still & Box alarm. Once a steady water supply was established, firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control.
Attached are some powerful images taken by Dennis McGuire, Jr., showing Engine 54’s Spartan apparatus arriving on the scene and Truck Company 20 performing their critical tasks. There are also shots of the rear of 7115, where the initial fire broke out, along with images of the firefighters battling the blaze from different angles.
These photos truly highlight the bravery and dedication of the Chicago Fire Department personnel who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and protect the surrounding structures. It’s always humbling to see how these professionals step up in moments like this, putting themselves in harm's way to keep our communities safe.
