The Countryside Fire Protection District has recently added a brand-new tanker truck to their fleet, although it's still undergoing final preparations before being officially put into service. This new unit, designated as Tanker 411, is set to replace an aging 1988 Pierce Dash model that has served them well but is now due for retirement. That older vehicle will be relocated to Libertyville, where it will either serve Libertyville directly or act as a backup resource for Countryside.
The new Tanker 411 features a compact design with an IHC 4400 two-door cab mounted on a short chassis with a single rear axle. It boasts a powerful 1,000-GPM pump, a 2,000-gallon water tank, and a 30-gallon foam tank capable of carrying Class-A foam. The hose bed can accommodate up to 1,000 feet of hose, including 700 feet of 5-inch hose and approximately 600 feet of 2-1/2-inch hose. Additionally, there’s a 200-foot 1-3/4-inch crosslay and another 200 to 300 feet of 3-inch hose.
One notable feature of this tanker is its rear platform designed specifically for safe and efficient hose loading. The non-slip surface allows water to drain freely, ensuring safety during operations. Beneath this platform lies a backup camera, aiding drivers in maneuvering the vehicle effectively. On both sides and at the rear, remote-controlled chutes extend outward from the body, facilitating quick deployment of equipment when needed.
Access to the hose-loading platform is via a ladder attached to the rear of the tanker. The back also includes an arrow stick for directional guidance, a backup camera for enhanced visibility, and NFPA-compliant chevron striping for improved night-time recognition.
Inside, Tanker 411 houses a 30-gallon foam tank alongside its 1,000-GPM pump, making it highly versatile for various firefighting scenarios. The exterior design emphasizes functionality without compromising durability, with the body constructed entirely from stainless steel.
Looking ahead, Countryside anticipates receiving a new GMC/Horton ambulance and an IHC/Rosenbauer Timberwolf interface engine by August. These additions will further bolster their emergency response capabilities, ensuring they remain prepared to handle any situation efficiently.
