Early on Friday morning (6/2/17), the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (LRFPD) was dispatched to 24341 Elm Road following reports of an ATV fire. As crews arrived, it became clear that the situation was escalating. A follow-up call confirmed that the flames had spread to the attached garage, prompting immediate action. Lake Forest Engine 422 was the first to arrive and quickly assessed the situation as a fully involved garage fire.
Upon arrival, Battalion 51 upgraded the alarm to a Code 4, indicating an active fire requiring additional resources. Simultaneously, a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated, calling in reinforcements from neighboring departments. The home, located in an unincorporated area of Lake Forest without nearby hydrants, presented unique challenges. LRFPD Engines 52, Squad 51, and Battalion 51 were quick to respond, with Countryside Engine 411 arriving shortly after to assist. The initial attack utilized all available tank water, but it soon became apparent that more resources were needed.
Portable tanks were set up by Long Grove and Countryside tankers. While Long Grove began drafting water from these portable tanks to supply the firefighting efforts, other departments like Countryside, Wauconda, Grayslake, and the Palatine Rural FPD worked tirelessly to shuttle water from a hydrant about a mile away. Despite the challenges, firefighters managed to contain the fire primarily to the garage, with some extension into the house and attic.
As I watched the scene unfold, it was clear how coordinated and efficient the response was. Firefighters were seen venting the roof of the house and battling the intense flames. The charred remains of the ATV and the smoldering aftermath of the fire were stark reminders of the devastation caused. Long hoses stretched across the property, creating an intricate network of water lines to support the suppression efforts.
Looking at the photos taken by Larry Shapiro, one can appreciate the scale and intensity of the operation. From the portable tanks being filled by tanker trucks to the firefighters working diligently under challenging conditions, every detail reflects the professionalism and dedication of those involved. It's inspiring to see how communities come together during emergencies like this, pooling resources and manpower to protect lives and property.
