Crash with entrapment in Prospect Heights, 3-21-23

Chief Drew Smith from the Prospect Heights Fire District here. Let me tell you about what happened yesterday, on Tuesday, March 21. Our teams got called out to an accident involving multiple vehicles near Elmhurst Road, just north of Palatine Road. When we arrived, it was clear things were serious—four cars had been involved in the crash. One driver, inside an SUV, was trapped, and we had to get them out as quickly and safely as possible. The initial challenge was that part of a pickup truck’s front end was blocking the SUV's driver's side door. Our firefighters worked efficiently to remove the door so they could access the trapped individual. At first, there was consideration to try and extract the person through the passenger side, but due to the car’s interior layout and deformation caused by the crash, it wasn’t the best option. Ultimately, using the driver’s side made more sense. We received great support from Wheeling and Des Plaines ambulances. Two people were transported to the hospital in stable condition. I’m proud to say our Prospect Heights firefighters did an excellent job under pressure. Their quick thinking and teamwork really paid off in this situation. Here are some photos from the scene provided by the Prospect Heights Fire District. As you can see, it was quite a challenging situation, but our team handled it professionally. [Attached are several images showing the scene, the damaged vehicles, and the efforts to extricate the driver.] This is just another example of how our firefighters rise to the occasion when emergencies happen. They train hard for moments like these, and it shows in their performance. Stay safe everyone! —Chief Drew Smith
