The Daily Herald recently featured an article discussing how the Antioch Fire Department is stepping up to handle emergency medical services (EMS) for both the town of Antioch and its surrounding unincorporated areas. This marks a significant shift from the past, as it’s the first time since 1938 that the Antioch Rescue Squad (ARS) isn’t handling ambulance services for these calls.
According to officials, the longstanding contract between the ARS and the First Fire Protection District of Antioch officially concluded early Friday morning. As a result, all 27,000 residents within Antioch and the township will now rely on the Antioch Fire Department for their ambulance needs. Fire Chief John Nixon expressed satisfaction with the transition process, stating that it went smoothly without any disruptions. “We’ve successfully taken over the operations at fire station 3 on Grass Lake Road,†he noted, adding that 11 fire department personnel are currently stationed across the district’s three fire stations.
Chief Nixon also mentioned that necessary fire service software was integrated into the dispatch systems and ambulances, ensuring a seamless handover. He reassured residents that they shouldn’t notice any difference when calling for help. This change was prompted by the First Fire Protection District’s decision earlier this year to end its agreement with the ARS. Instead, they opted to centralize firefighting and rescue services under one umbrella organization. A similar move was made by the village last year.
Todd Thommes, president of the ARS, acknowledged the situation but indicated uncertainty about the squad's next steps. “At this point, we’re still evaluating our options,†he admitted. “There’s no clear path forward yet, so we’ll need to discuss our future plans thoroughly.â€
Thanks for sharing this update, Dan! It’s fascinating to see how local emergency services are evolving in Antioch.
