An open letter received – Chicago Safety; Re: George Floyd

Dear CFD Engine 94 Team,

I wanted to start by sincerely thanking you for your incredible work on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Your dedication and bravery have not gone unnoticed, and I deeply respect what you do every day.

Today, I’m writing to share a personal reflection about the deep emotional pain our country is going through in response to the tragic death of George Floyd. As a clinical psychologist based in Chicago, I’ve spent years working with individuals dealing with grief, trauma, and the long-term effects of systemic injustice. What we’re witnessing in Minnesota and across the country isn’t just protest—it’s a collective expression of heartbreak, anger, and a history of racial trauma that continues to affect us all.

It’s essential that people who are grieving and feeling outraged are allowed to express their emotions without fear of being dismissed or misunderstood. Trauma doesn’t always show up as silence—it often shows up as rage, confusion, and a need to be heard. This is why I believe it’s so important for those in positions of authority, like yourselves, to approach these situations with empathy and understanding.

Here’s an idea: What if, instead of simply trying to control the situation, you could visually show that you understand the pain? For example, wearing signs such as “I Can’t Breathe” or displaying flags like “Black Lives Matter” and “Again?” on your uniforms or equipment. These symbols could help bridge the gap between the community and the authorities, showing that you’re not here to silence them—but to support and protect them.

This kind of gesture might make protesters feel seen, heard, and less threatened. It could shift the dynamic from one of conflict to one of shared understanding and collaboration. The message would be clear: “We see your pain, we hear your voices, and we’re here to help keep you safe.”

I know your jobs are demanding, and I truly appreciate the time you take to read this. Thank you again for your service and for considering this perspective. I hope my thoughts can contribute in some small way to creating more compassion and connection during this difficult time.

With gratitude,
Kristen Friedman
