Application
A tree chipper or woodchipper is a machine used to break down wood into smaller chips, typically for use as mulch, fuel, or in the papermaking process. These machines are often portable and mounted on wheels, making them easy to transport behind trucks or vans. They are powered by internal combustion engines ranging from 3 horsepower (2.2 kW) up to 1,000 horsepower (750 kW). Some high-power models are installed directly on trucks with their own separate engine and may include a hydraulic crane for heavy lifting.
The main components of a tree chipper include a hopper with a collar, a chipping mechanism, and sometimes a collection bin. A tree limb is inserted into the hopper, where it is fed into the chipping unit. The resulting chips are then expelled through a chute and can be directed into a truck or onto the ground. Typical chip sizes range from 1 inch (2.5 cm) to 2 inches (5.1 cm), depending on the model and settings. Wood chips have various applications, such as being used as ground cover, compost, or in industrial processes like paper production.
