Styrene modified membrane efficient recovery dewaxing solvent

The styrene-modified membrane developed by the Daqing Chemical Research Center at the Petrochemical Research Institute has recently been granted a national invention patent. This innovative membrane is designed to separate and recover toluene and butanone solvents from the filtrate of lube ketone benzene dewaxing processes. At -15°C, it achieves a rejection rate as high as 88%, making it a game-changer for energy efficiency and resource conservation in industrial solvent recovery. Modern lubricating oil base oil dewaxing primarily relies on solvent dewaxing techniques. Despite using large amounts of solvents, effective recycling remains a critical challenge. Traditionally, the three-way evaporation method was used, which consumed significant energy during the heating and condensation cycles. To address this issue, the Daqing team introduced a more efficient and energy-saving approach using styrene-modified membranes for solvent recovery. The researchers utilized polyacrylonitrile, polysulfone, or polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes as the base material. They then grafted styrene monomers onto the surface of these membranes to create a nanofiltration membrane. This new membrane exhibits strong hydrophobic properties, uniform small pores, and enhanced separation performance compared to conventional polymer membranes. It effectively separates and recovers toluene and butanone from the dewaxed filtrate of lube ketone benzene, achieving high rejection rates under specific operating conditions. This patented technology enables the direct recovery of ketobenzene solvents from lubricating oil dewaxing filtrate at low temperatures. By reducing the need for fuel in evaporation and minimizing cooling water usage in condensation, it not only increases lubricant output but also lowers the emission of volatile organic compounds like toluene and butanone. As a result, it significantly reduces environmental pollution and contributes to sustainable industrial practices.
