Glen Ellyn box alarm June 27, 2011

At approximately 4:40 AM on June 27th, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department, part of MABAS Division 12, received a call from a homeowner in the 500 block of Dawes Avenue reporting that their house was on fire. The scene quickly escalated as firefighters arrived to find intense flames bursting from the front door. From the street, the two-story structure appeared normal, but from the rear, the situation was far more severe. Stephen Wilcox, a local photographer and observer, was among the first to arrive and documented the unfolding event with detailed commentary and photographs. He noted that the family had safely evacuated through the lower-level rear double doors, as confirmed by Craig Eldridge, a spokesperson for the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company. The fire quickly spread throughout the basement and first floor, with flames engulfing the back of the house. A cooking pit and three propane tanks were located near the point of origin, which contributed significantly to the intensity of the fire. All the propane tanks exploded, adding to the rapid spread of flames. Firefighters used two-and-a-half-inch lines to bring the fire under control before deploying a tower to tackle the remaining flames in the roof and attic. Despite efforts, both the second floor and the roof collapsed during the incident. Water supply was limited due to only four-inch mains in the area, so crews had to manage water usage carefully. As the sun rose, the full extent of the damage became clear. The house was severely damaged, with fire still burning in the attic and through the roof. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the family escaped unharmed. Stephen’s photos capture the chaos and destruction, offering a firsthand look at the challenging conditions faced by emergency responders that early morning.
