Electromagnetic holographic sensing oil and gas pipeline testing equipment won the first prize of the innovation competition

The "Infrared Holographic Sensing Oil and Gas Pipeline Intelligent In-Detection Instrument" project, developed by the Research and Development Innovation Center of Shenyang Institute of Instrument Science in Liaoning Province, has won first prize at the National Finals of the China Innovation Method Competition. The team, led by Song Huadong, Ma Yinan, and Wang Zhongwei, also received several other notable awards. [Image: A photo of the project's instrument or team members] Oil and gas pipeline transportation is often referred to as the "energy bloodline" of a country, playing a crucial role in the national economy. In-pipe inspection is an internationally recognized method for ensuring the safe operation of pipelines. However, before this breakthrough, China's oil and gas pipeline monitoring market was dominated by foreign companies from Europe and the United States. This not only came with high service costs—approximately 3 million yuan per 100 kilometers—but more importantly, it posed serious risks to national security, as sensitive data such as pipeline operations and geographic coordinates could be exposed. Faced with significant opportunities in the field of intelligent pipeline detection, the Shenyang Institute's R&D Center adopted an enterprise collaboration approach to secure research funding. While focusing on the development of intelligent internal inspection technology for terrestrial oil and gas pipelines, they also expanded their efforts to marine pipelines. In partnership with Northeastern University and CNOOC Energy Development Equipment Technology Co., Ltd., they successfully applied for a major national scientific research instrument development project. Through continuous innovation, the institute conducted in-depth research on the application of "three-axis magnetic flux leakage and pulse eddy current composite heterogeneous field detection technology" in detecting pipeline wall defects. They focused on key technologies such as electromagnetic holographic imaging of wall defects, pipeline robot integration, positioning, and defect evaluation. As a result, they successfully developed an intelligent holographic sensing oil and gas pipeline internal testing instrument. The first China Innovation Method Competition National Finals was organized by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, and the Hunan Provincial People's Government. The competition theme was “Innovative Entrepreneurship, Method First.” A total of 150 teams from 32 regional competitions competed in the finals, covering 39 industries, including machinery, electronics, materials, chemicals, new energy, and transportation. Innovation methods refer to effective theories, techniques, and tools that people have developed through practical activities in invention creation, scientific research, or problem-solving. This competition aims to inspire frontline scientific and technological workers to innovate more actively, promote the broader and deeper application of innovative methods, and drive development through innovation.
