From the Addison Fire District:
In recent years, protective gear like bulletproof vests and ballistic helmets has become more common among paramedics and firefighters. With the increasing frequency of active shooter incidents, there's a growing urgency to respond quickly and effectively. Traditionally, police would secure the area first before medical personnel entered to assist victims. However, in today’s evolving landscape, a coordinated task force approach is now being adopted.A team of police officers and emergency responders now enters an active scene together, providing immediate care and evacuation of injured individuals. The Addison Fire Protection District is taking this one step further by equipping its on-duty paramedics and firefighters with specialized protective gear. This will allow them to join law enforcement during active shooter situations, significantly improving their safety in high-risk environments. The district has approved a $16,283 budget to purchase protective vests and ballistic helmets. These items will be stored on emergency vehicles for quick access when needed. “We can no longer sit back and wait,†said Fire Chief Joe Leone. “We must act alongside the police and provide life-saving care as soon as possible.†The department has already completed training programs and is now fully prepared to handle these critical incidents with a more proactive and integrated response strategy.
