From the Addison Fire District:
In recent years, protective gear like bulletproof vests and ballistic helmets has become more common among paramedics and firefighters. With the rise in active shooter incidents, there's an increasing urgency to respond quickly and effectively. Traditionally, police would secure the scene first before medical personnel entered to treat victims. However, with the new task force approach, police and emergency responders now work together to enter dangerous situations and provide immediate care. The Addison Fire Protection District is taking a proactive step by equipping its on-duty paramedics and firefighters with protective gear. This will allow them to join law enforcement during active shooter events and operate safely in uncertain environments. The decision comes after careful consideration of the risks faced by first responders in today’s world. To support this initiative, the district has approved a budget of $16,283 for the purchase of tactical vests and helmets. These items will be stored on fire trucks and readily available whenever needed. "We can no longer stand by; we must act alongside the police and provide critical medical care as quickly as possible," said Fire Chief Joe Leone. "We've trained our teams, invested in the right gear, and are now prepared to face these challenges head-on."
