A nyloc nut, also known as a nylon insert lock nut, polymer insert lock nut, or elastic stop nut, is a type of locknut that prevents loosening due to vibration. It features a nylon collar inserted into the nut, which creates friction against the screw threads. The nylon insert is slightly smaller in inner diameter than the major diameter of the screw, causing it to deform elastically over the threads without cutting them. This deformation applies a compressive force that locks the nut in place. Nyloc nuts maintain their locking ability up to 250°F (121°C). While some sources suggest they can be reused, others recommend replacement in critical applications. For example, some automotive and aerospace guidelines advise replacing self-locking nuts after certain cycles, while others allow reuse if torque specifications are met.
