The fundamental reason for the tension in natural gas is the imbalance between supply and demand.

In view of the current tight supply of natural gas in some regions, Zhang Guobao, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission and director of the National Energy Administration, responded on the 23rd that the fundamental reason is the imbalance between natural gas supply and demand and the country is taking emergency measures.

Zhang Guobao said in an interview with reporters at the start of the development of the localization of key equipment for the Second West-East Gas Pipeline Project and the signing ceremony that this winter comes early and the demand for natural gas is fast. At present, the annual gas supply of the West-East Gas Pipeline project has reached 17 billion cubic meters, but compared with the demand, there are still more than one billion cubic meters of gaps this winter.

"The demand for natural gas is very strong, especially since this winter, it is getting earlier and the snow is bigger than in previous years. The contradiction between supply and demand is becoming increasingly prominent." Zhang Guobao said that natural gas demand is now erupting (for example, everyone used to burn honeycomb briquettes and now uses natural gas). There is still a gap in supply.

Zhang Guobao analyzed that lack of gas also has a price reason. At the same calorific value, natural gas is cheaper than gasoline, making society more willing to use natural gas. Regarding the argument that monopoly caused lack of gas, he said that he could not easily agree.

Zhang Guobao revealed that a series of measures are being taken to cope with the current tight supply of natural gas. For example, adopting temporary emergency measures such as using the newly built LNG project in Shanghai to increase the supply of gas to ease the tightness of gas supply this year. In addition, the western section of the Central Asia Gas Pipeline and West-East Gas Pipeline II project will be put into operation by the end of the year. CNPC is also actively considering the construction of the Shaan-Jing Third Line and the Central Asia Gas Pipeline Phase II project.

Regarding natural gas prices, Zhang Guobao said that the current natural gas price reform plan is still under study.

Since November, a long period of rain and snow weather in China has caused a rapid increase in the use of natural gas in North China, the two lakes, the northwest, and the east China, which has generally surpassed supply plans. The contradiction between supply and demand for natural gas has been prominent.
