Fatal plane crash in Wheeling

Updated at 12AM

Shortly before 3 PM this afternoon, a small aircraft that had just departed from the Chicago Executive Airport (also known as Palwaukee) reported engine trouble and initiated a turn to return to the airport. Unfortunately, the plane lost altitude and struck a building located at 760 S. Wolf Road before crashing into the rear parking lot of an industrial complex. The impact also caused damage to two vehicles. There were two people on board. One of them did not survive the crash, while the other was found on the ground, about 30 feet away from the wreckage, by the first emergency responders. The survivor suffered severe burns and multiple fractures. He was quickly stabilized and transported via a Flight-For-Life medical helicopter to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for further treatment. A full report on the incident can be found here. Both the Wheeling Fire Department and the Prospect Heights Fire Department serve the airport, so they are typically dispatched together during such emergencies. Wheeling Engine 23 was the first fire unit to arrive, and firefighters used hand lines from that unit along with foam from Prospect Heights Crash Truck 39 to suppress the fire. Larry Shapiro was on the scene and has captured a powerful gallery of 100 photos, which you can view here.
