Shortly before 3 PM this afternoon, a small plane that had just taken off from the Chicago Executive Airport (also known as Palwaukee) reported engine trouble and began a turn to return to the airport. Unfortunately, during this maneuver, the aircraft lost altitude and clipped a building located at 760 S. Wolf Road before crashing into the rear parking lot of the facility. The plane struck two cars in the process. There were two people on board—one of whom died in the crash, while the other survived but was seriously injured. The survivor was found about 30 feet away from the wreckage by first responders and was suffering from burns and multiple fractures. He was quickly secured and transported via Flight For Life helicopter to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for emergency care. A detailed report on the incident is available here. Both the Wheeling Fire Department and the Prospect Heights Fire Department are responsible for airport-related emergencies, and they responded together to this call. Wheeling Engine 23 was the first unit to arrive, and firefighters used hand lines from that unit along with foam from Prospect Heights Crash Truck 39 to contain the fire. Larry Shapiro, who was on the scene, has shared a gallery of 100 photos here, offering a powerful visual account of the crash and the response efforts. The plane hit one car on impact and the resulting fire damaged several others.
