Excerpts from NorthernStar.info:
A local initiative is taking shape in DeKalb as a community-driven foundation aims to establish a museum dedicated to preserving the rich history of the DeKalb Fire Department. Some of the artifacts they plan to showcase date back nearly 150 years, offering a glimpse into the department’s storied past.
The DeKalb Firefighters Historical Foundation, launched four years ago, has been working tirelessly to safeguard the legacy of the fire department and its deep ties to the city and Northern Illinois University. Patrick Eriksen, a firefighter and paramedic with the department, shared that the foundation and the museum idea have grown side by side.
"We’re approaching our 150th anniversary, and we’ve collected a wide range of items—everything from old fire trucks to small historical badges," Eriksen said. "It's all part of keeping our history alive."
Founded in 1869 as a volunteer force, the DeKalb Fire Department transitioned to a full-time department in 1904. Among the most unique pieces in their collection is a vintage dispatch board, which used levers to produce ticker tape for emergency addresses. Eriksen noted that only two such boards remain in the entire country.
"Being able to preserve this tradition in the town I've always called home means a lot to me," he added. "It’s a special opportunity to honor the past while looking forward to the future."
Currently, the foundation is in discussions with the city about a potential site for the museum, though details cannot be disclosed at this time. Lieutenant Todd Stoffa, who leads the foundation, mentioned that several options are being explored to move the project forward.
To raise funds, the DeKalb Fire Department will host its fourth Annual Pancake Breakfast on Sunday. The event, held at Station 1 on Pine Street, will offer breakfast for $5 for adults, $3 for children aged 4–10, and free for those under 4. Tickets will be sold on-site.
All proceeds will go toward purchasing the building for the museum, as well as funding ongoing maintenance and infrastructure through the foundation. Eriksen expressed hope that once the initial goal is met, additional funds could support other community initiatives.
In addition to the pancake breakfast, the event will feature an open house tour of the fire station, a bounce house, and a smoke trailer to promote fire safety during Fire Prevention Month. It's a family-friendly day filled with education, fun, and community spirit.
If you're interested in attending, the breakfast runs from 8 a.m. to noon. For more information, contact Adam Miller at 815-748-8649.
