Excerpts from NorthernStar.info:
A local initiative is taking shape as a community foundation aims to establish a museum dedicated to preserving the rich history of the DeKalb Fire Department. Some of the items that will be displayed date back nearly 150 years, to the department's founding in 1869.
The DeKalb Firefighters Historical Foundation, established four years ago, has been working hard to maintain the legacy of the fire department and its deep ties to the city of DeKalb and Northern Illinois University. Patrick Eriksen, a firefighter and paramedic with the department, shared that the foundation and the museum idea have developed side by side.
"We're approaching our 150th anniversary, and we've collected so many items over the years—everything from old fire trucks to vintage badges," Eriksen said. "It's really about keeping the story alive."
The DeKalb Fire Department started as a volunteer force and transitioned into a full-time department in 1904. Among the most valuable artifacts is a rare dispatch board, which uses a series of levers to produce a ticker tape that once helped locate emergency calls. According to Eriksen, only two such boards remain in the country.
"It means a lot to me to carry on this tradition in a place I've always wanted to make a difference," he added.
The foundation is currently in discussions with the city about a potential location for the museum, though the details cannot be disclosed at this time. Lieutenant Todd Stoffa, who leads the foundation, mentioned that several options are being explored.
To raise funds, the fire department will host its fourth annual Pancake Breakfast this Sunday. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to noon at Station 1, located at 700 Pine Street. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children aged 4 to 10, and free for those under 4. Tickets will be sold on-site.
All proceeds will go toward purchasing the building for the museum, as well as funding maintenance and infrastructure. Eriksen noted that once the initial goal is met, more resources could be allocated to other historical projects.
In addition to the pancake breakfast, the event will feature an open house tour of the station, a bounce house for kids, and a smoke trailer to promote fire safety during Fire Prevention Month. It’s a family-friendly way to support the cause while learning about the department's storied past.
